Need Help With "Login Setup" For Networking Computers
I need a little help with my home networking for my computers. When I try to access my laptop from my desktop or vis-a-vesa,to upload a fille to it or to just access it, it asks for a login and password and I don't know how to set it up.I'm using Win 7 on desktop and Vista Ultimate on my laptop and have checked all settings that I know of, like, file shareing, workgroup, and permissions. I'm the only one using my system so I have permissions set to "admin". I'm at my wits end.Thank You!!TomP

Hi, You can try to disable Password protected sharing on your Windows Vista computer to troubleshoot the problem. Open Network and Sharing Center, under Sharing and Discovery, please choose Turn off password protected sharing. Hope it helps.

With no passwords set, use Everyone for sharing, as follows: To share a Vista folder, click it > Share on the Toolbar > Advanced Sharing, click Share this folder > Apply > OK, etc. To share a Windows 7 folder, right-click it > Properties > Sharing Tab > Advanced Sharing > Share this folder > Apply, OK > Close. An alternative way of sharing is to drag the folders you want to share to the Public folder. BothAs you dont have Password Protected Sharing turned on, you have to change the security permissions on your folder(s) to allow Everyone access. Right-click the shared folder > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add and type Everyone (not the quotes) into the box and OK. Tick the boxes next to the permissions you want to allow (e.g. Read or Write, etc.) then Apply > OK, etc. You may see some screens coming up with message 'An error occurred while applying ..'. This is not unusual and can be ignored by clicking Continue.

Burr:Did as you stated. Added"Everyone" to my permissions in Win7 and Vistabut it didn't help. All my permissions are set to allow "full access" to all files and folders.Any more ideas? I just don't have any more ideas as to what my problem might be, other than something within Win7 and Vista that I'm not understanding. Thanks:TomP

Did you reboot after changing the settings? Maybe a reboot would refresh everything so it connects ok?

Lets deal with Windows 7 first. 1. Do you have a third-party firewall? If so, uninstall it as the Windows one should suffice.2. Do two little people appear on the icons of the folders that are shared?3. Go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing Settings. In the Home or Work profile (not HomeGroup), make sure you have Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing and Public Folder Sharing all set to On and Password Protected Sharing to Off.

Got it going. I did a complete reinstall on my laptop with vista ultimate and it seemed to have corrected the problem. I guess it was something wrong with my laptop and vista. Thanks for all the help.TomP
